Want to go on a snowshoe tour in Steamboat Springs this winter? You’ve come to the right place! Below you will find descriptions of each of our snowshoe tours.
We also offer guided skiing and snowboarding tours twice a week at the Steamboat Ski Resort!

Private Tours

One of our most popular options! We’ll use our decades of knowledge to help you find the perfect adventure for your group- all ages are welcome, and no snowshoe experience is need. Our Naturalists are experts at winter ecology, animal tracking, plant ID, and engaging youth & adults. A private tour with Yampatika will open your eyes to the natural world around you! We also size, put on, and teach basic snowshoe skills to people of all ages; you’ll be in great hands.

We only offer private tours on specific days and times on a first-come, first-served basis.

 Snowshoe rentals are included in the cost and will be brought to the trailhead by your Naturalist. We have snowshoes for kids and adults.

Destinations we are permitted for, but limited to, Rabbit Ears Pass, Emerald Mountain/Howelsen Hill, Fish Creek Falls, municipal trails in town, Historic Legacy Ranch, Steamboat Ski Touring Center, and much more!

Cost Breakdown- $50/person/hour + travel fees. You can find more pricing information on the private tour registration page. There is a $200 minimum for all private tours. 

How to Book:

Step 1: Go to our Reservation Page

Step 2: Find a date with the option to “Hire a Guide,” if there are no sessions listed that day we either do not offer tours that day or it is already booked.

Step 3: Reserve the date for free, this will prompt a Yampatika staff member will follow up with a consultation phone call to talk about your transportation options (we do not provide transportation) and your group such as ages and interests and together we can determine the perfect adventure tailored to you!

Step 4: Payment is due once details have been confirmed and you will be all set!

WINTER NATURE TOUR DESCRIPTIONS FOR WINTER 

Ski with a Naturalist!

Tuesdays AND Thursdays, Dates TBD

1:30 PM – 2:30 PM;  ALL AGES, FREE, NO RSVP NEEDED- just show up!

Mere steps away from the top of the Gondola, join a Yampatika Naturalist on the green run “Why Not.” Depending on the day, you could see old bear dens and claw marks, porcupine hang-out spots, and snow cameras! Along the way, you’ll learn about elk, moose, and the colorful birds that call the Steamboat Ski Resort home.

Meeting Location: Steamboat Ski Resort; meet at the large trail map across from Thunderhead Lodge at the top of the “Why Not” run.

Cost: FREE thanks to the Steamboat Ski Resort Corporation  – lift ticket NOT included, no rental equipment available

Mountainside Snowshoe Tour

Wednesdays, Dates TBD
10 AM – 11:30 AM; AGES 16+, Registration required, $20 includes snowshoe rentals.

The Steamboat Ski Touring Center is nestled between Fish Creek and the Steamboat Ski Resort- a mere 2.5 miles from the base of the resort. This snowshoe tour offers gentle rolling hills with stunning views and evidence of wildlife all around. This snowshoe tour is a fantastic morning activity to add to your visit to Steamboat!

Transportation: We do not provide transportation. This location is about 2 miles away from the base of the resort, and most hotel shuttles will come to this location; if planning on taking a hotel shuttle double check beforehand they go to this location,, the bus doesn’t have a stop very close by. Parking is free and plentiful on-site.

Citizen Science After Dark with the USFS

Wednesdays, Dates TBD

6:00 – 8:00 PM snowshoe, Ages 13+, Registration Required.
$20 for deposit and snowshoe rentals. If no rentals are needed your deposit will be refunded for attendance.

Join Yampatika naturalists and US Forest Service biologists on this nighttime snowshoe tour! Throughout the tour, we will stop to survey for boreal owls and search for other species of interest on the ski mountain. Snowshoers will also be trained on the new Steamboat Ski Resort – Wildlife Watchers iNaturalist project. This hike is perfect for high school-aged folks and older who have an interest in the wildlife around the Steamboat Ski Resort!

 

Transportation: we do not offer transportation often, local accommodations may have shuttles that will drop off at the location make sure to check beforehand. Locations vary, check out the regsitration page to see where we’ll be!

Fish Creek Falls Uranium Mine Trail Snowshoe Tour

Fridays, Dates TBD

10:00 AM – 1 PM, AGES 16+, Registration Required.
$20 for deposit and snowshoe rentals. If no rentals are needed your deposit will be refunded for attendance.

Fish Creek Falls is a must-see destination, and the Uranium Mine trail will give you sweeping views of the falls, canyon, ski resort, and surrounding mountains- all in one hike! This tour is a great way to stretch your legs from skiing/snowboarding, or a perfect way to get out on the snow if you’re not a skier/boarder yourself!

Transportation: We do not provide transportation often; local accommodations have shuttles that do not operate this early or will not drop off at the location; check beforehand. The local free bus system does NOT have a stop in this area. The Fish Creek Falls parking lots have an USFS day-use fee of $5.

Howelsen Hill Snowshoe Tour

Saturdays, Dates TBD

10 AM – 12 PM; AGES 16+ $25 includes snowshoe rentals. Registration required.

Located in easy-to-access downtown, this snowshoe tour features a chair lift to get the group up near the top of the hike (weather permitting lift use). The tour winds through multiple ecosystems full of signs of wildlife with an amazing view of the valley looking out towards the Steamboat Ski Resort.

Transportation: You are responsible for your own transportation PLAN AHEAD- sometimes local hotels have shuttles that do not operate this early, secure your transportation plans as soon as possible. There is a local bus stop .5 miles from the meeting location, check City of Steamboat bus transit to plan.

Monthly Special Programs

Registration is required for all

Moonlight Snowshoe Tour: These moonlit tours are a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the still of winter nights. Along the way, our master naturalists will search for wildlife tracks while talking about the plant and animal life in the area.

Stagecoach Snowshoe Tours: These snowshoe tours will allow folks to explore the winter wonderland of Stagecoach Reservoir. Along the way, we’ll search for signs of wildlife and talk about the incredible Yampa River.
