PUBLIC FALL PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Fall Foliage Photography Hikes
w/Morning Light Photography
September 26th and October 27th
11 AM – 2 PM; Registration required
Upgrade your outdoor photos- any camera is welcome! Your phone, simple digital cameras and DSLRs can benefit from understanding how to compose and light in outdoor settings in partnership with Morning Light Photography- a Yampatika Naturalist sheds light on the ecology behind your subjects while you gain first-hand help capturing the magic of Fall in the Yampa Valley with our photographer.
What to wear: Dress for the weather (current and future) and dress in layers! You’ll most likely want long pants/sleeves to protect yourself from the sun, dirt, and things that might make you itchy (mosquitos, etc.). Avoid cotton when you’re able and go with a synthetic material or wool. Also remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes, good socks, a cool sun hat, and sunscreen!
What to bring in your day pack: 2 Water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, extra layers (long sleeve shirt, fleece) and also bring your waterproof jacket!

Nature Journaling Hike
w/Edith Hornik-Beer
October 5th
8:30 am – 11:30 am; Registration required
Join Yampatika Naturalists and author Edith Hornik-Beer as we explore nature and the feelings it invokes. Along the trail, participants will be encouraged to look inward while taking in the scenery around them. After our walk, participants will have the opportunity to write about their experiences and delve deeper into the connection between humans and nature.
What to wear: Dress for the weather (current and future) and dress in layers! Many people like to wear long pants/sleeves to protect themselves from the sun, dirt, and things that might make you itchy (mosquitos, etc.). Avoid cotton when you’re able to and go with a synthetic material or wool. Also remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes, good socks, and sunscreen!
What to bring in your day pack: 2 Water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, extra layers (long sleeve shirt, fleece) and also bring your waterproof jacket- weather changes quickly, make sure to come for cooler/wet weather. Bring your own notebook and writing utensils!
Location: We will meet at the USFS/Yampatika Office at 8:15am to carpool to the Dry Lake Campground.
Fall Foliage and Wildlife Hike
Tuesday, October 10th
8:30 – 10:30 AM; FREE; Registration required
Join Yampatika Naturalists on this fall-themed hike as we walk through the beautiful fall foliage and talk about wildlife. As we walk the trail, participants will learn all about local wildlife, like elk, moose, and bears. Hikers will gain a deeper understanding of animal behavior and what the wild animals in the area are up to as they prepare for winter. Participants will also learn more about how to coexist with the wildlife that call Steamboat Springs home.
